I vote to honor my parents who, in 1962, saw me board a plane from Havana to Miami. The plane was one of many flights carrying only children—children whose parents, like mine, made the heroic and heart-wrenching decision that it was better to never see their children again than have their children live without liberty.
I vote to honor my son and my nephews, and my nieces—all born in this great country—so that they will never be faced with making the decision about their children that my mother and father made when I was eight years old.
I vote because I can.
I vote because I must.
